Power walk the talk for Mothers Day

TeamMONASH participants in the 2011 Mothers Day Classic
Members of the Monash community are continuing the TeamMONASH™ legacy this Mothers Day by participating in the Mothers Day Classic to support the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF).
Director of Monash Sport, Martin Doulton, said raising awareness and funds for the NBCF had never been so important.
“With one in nine women diagnosed with breast cancer before the age of 85 and breast cancer being the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women today, it’s safe to say that at least someone in our lives has been affected by cancer in some way,” Mr Doulton said.
This year marks the 15th annual Mothers Day Classic and TeamMONASH™ currently holds the position of largest team in Victoria, with 270 participants, who will be completing either the 4 or 8km event around the Alexandra Gardens.
“In true TeamMONASH™ spirit, completing the event isn’t the only way to be involved. Many other members of the Monash community will be volunteering on the day and anyone can donate to the cause,” Mr Doulton said.
Maike Kemmerlings, a fourth year Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (Honours) student at the Peninsula campus, said the event was a good way to honour all of those who had lost their lives to breast cancer.
“I am currently training to complete the 8km Mother’s Day Classic event. In 2011 a close friend completed the run in dedication to her grandmother who had lost her life to the disease,” Maike said.
“This year I felt participating would be a good way to help raise awareness and money toward increasing research to help find a cure.”
In 2011, Monash University was awarded the ‘Largest Tertiary Team’ title with over 300 participants, to surpass this milestone again in 2012, visit the Monash Sport website to register.
TeamMONASH™ has been the leading supporting university for breast cancer research in the event for five consecutive years and was also the largest Victorian team and the second-largest team nationally to enter in 2011.
The Melbourne Mothers Day Classic will be held from 7am-12pm on 13 May at the Alexandra Gardens, Melbourne.
