Monash University has been ranked fourth in Australia following the release of rankings from the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) of Leiden University for 2013.

This year’s rankings saw a significant improvement in the University’s standing, up from seventh in Australia, and in terms of research quality or most frequently citied research, now at 178 up from 261 in 2012.

The CWTS of Leiden University for 2013 also saw Monash ranked 79 in the world for research output.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Ed Byrne said the ranking measures a number of things, amongst them the proportion of the publications of a university that, compared with other publications in the same field and in the same year, belong to the top 10 per cent most frequently cited, across all subject areas and geographies.

"On that metric, we are fourth in Australia, with 11.2 per cent of our publications in the top 10 per cent," Professor Byrne said.

"This year’s results are an extraordinary achievement and are indicative of the overall quality of the University’s teaching and learning, and its research. They are further proof that our students are receiving a world-class education."

The rankings are based on data from the Web of Science bibliographic database produced by Thomson Reuters. The ranking includes the 500 universities worldwide with the largest publication output in the Web of Science database.

The CWTS is a leading provider of science and technology indicators and of performance and benchmark studies of scientific groups and institutes, including bibliometric mapping and network analysis of science.
