Technology with the potential to change lives

Home care can sometimes be worse than the alternative.

Home care can sometimes be worse than the alternative.

The role of advanced technologies which can transform lives and support independence will be the focus of an upcoming industry workshop.

Convened jointly by the Institute of Safety, Compensation and Recovery Research (ISCRR) and Monash University, the ‘Future Directions in Assisted Living and Healthcare’ workshop will explore the effect technology can have on healthcare delivery.

CEO of ISCRR, Professor Niki Ellis, said emerging technologies have the potential to change the lives of people with a disability and the elderly.

“With longer lifespans, an ageing population and an association between age and disability, the need for assistive technologies is expected to increase dramatically,” Professor Ellis said.

“The aim of this workshop is to identify the key needs of the elderly and people with disabilities and to explore the potential for technology to help them live independently and remain in their homes.”

The workshop will bring together international and national industry experts, architects, designers, information technology (IT) specialists, disability and career professionals, and interest and consumer advocacy groups.

Three different areas of Monash University will be contributing to the discussion; the Department of Management in the Faculty of Business and Economics, the Centre for Organisational and Social Informatics in the Faculty of IT and the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences.

Speakers at the two-day workshop include Kian Saneii, an international expert in senior care technology who will speak on how digital health technology can provide remote monitoring and the potential for 24/7 care.

Dean of the Monash Faculty of Art Design & Architecture, Professor Shane Murray, will speak on his research into contemporary housing and urban design issues.

ISCRR is a joint venture between Monash University, WorkSafe Victoria and the Transport Accident Commission (TAC).

‘Future Directions in Assisted Living and Healthcare’ will be held from 8.30am-5pm on 9-10 October 2012. This workshop is by invitation only, however anyone can participate in the workshop online via the ISCRR website. Email info@iscrr.com.au to register.
