Scotch to face off with Haileybury in Monash economic debate final

The Haileybury debating team is into the final of the Monash Viewpoint Economics debate
Scotch College will compete in a third consecutive grand final when they go head-to-head with Haileybury College on 6 April 2011 to determine this year’s winner of the Viewpoint Monash Economics Debate.
The state-wide debating contest is hosted by the Department of Economics and is designed to give students an opportunity to develop public speaking skills and increase their understanding of economic issues.
The competition this year attracted 23 teams.
In the semi-final, the teams debated the complex topic of petrol pricing in Australia, with Scotch College and Haileybury College progressing through to the grand final.
In the grand final, Scotch College will be represented by Ronald Zhang, Charlie Austin and Tyrone Connell, while Haileybury College will be represented by Miran Fernando, Barnaby Moore, Will Baer and Ken Tang.
“Viewpoint is more than just debating. It is about challenging the leaders of tomorrow and helping them to think through some of the complex economic and social issues that face Australia and the world,” said Professor Stephen King, Dean of Business and Economics at Monash University.
The Department of Economics in conjunction with the Debaters Association of Victoria will host the grand final on 6 April at the Caulfield campus of Monash University. For more information visit the Viewpoint website at http://viewpoint.monash.edu.au/index.html
