Costs for students

Costs associated with university study include course fees and general expenses to cover travel, books and materials.

Undergraduate courses

Domestic students enrolling in an undergraduate place at Monash must apply for a Commonwealth-supported place.

All international students undertaking courses off-campus must pay the international full-fee for a place in the course. Find out more on the International Student fees page.

Graduate and postgraduate courses

For domestic students, most places in graduate and postgraduate coursework programs are full-fee places. Limited numbers of Commonwealth-supported places are available in some courses.

All international students undertaking off-campus study must pay the international full fee.

Commonwealth-supported places

All Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens and holders of Australian permanent visas receive a Student Learning Entitlement, giving them access to seven years of full-time (or equivalent part-time) study in a Commonwealth-supported place. This may be extended where a student is undertaking a course in which the normal enrolment period is longer than six years (such as a double-degree program with an honours year).

The Australian government requires higher education students in a Commonwealth-supported place to contribute to the cost of their education. This means that students pay some of the cost and the government funds the balance. Most undergraduate places and some postgraduate places at Monash University are Commonwealth-supported places.

For more information on Commonwealth-supported places, visit the Fees site.

Student payment options

For Australian citizens and holders of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa, there are two payment options. Students can either (1) pay all or some of their contribution upfront at the time of enrolment and receive a 20 per cent discount, or (2) defer the payment via the HECS-HELP scheme.

New Zealand citizens and holders of an Australian permanent resident visa must pay the student contribution amount upfront without a discount.

HECS-HELP

Australian citizens and holders of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa are eligible for assistance through the HECS-HELP scheme.

HECS-HELP means students can defer their student contribution payments and make the payments through the tax system once they start earning a certain level of income.
