Synopsis: The unit extends the internet computing concepts taught in MMS2802 by looking at the role of Extensible Markup Language (XML) in web application development. The structure of an XML document is investigated and the manner in which such a document can be converted to HTML or other formats. The use of Scalable Vector Graphics to visualise XML data will be examined. XML will be investigated as a non-proprietary method for exchanging data between organisations and systems. Web Distributed Data Exchange (WDDX) and Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) will be used within ColdFusion and Microsoft .NET.

Assessment: Assignments: Two assignments (40%) Examination: A two-hour final written examination (40%) and a one-hour practical examination (20%)

Contact Hours: The student workload requirement is 12 hours per week for 13 weeks. Students will attend 2 hours of lectures and one 2 hour tutorial/laboratory session per week.
