This unit will prepare students for fieldwork education and includes clinical reasoning in relation to the practice activities they engage in and observe.
Students will apply theoretical knowledge to the practice environment, learn to gather relevant client information, demonstrate client-centred practice principles, and demonstrate basic documentation skills (including progress notes and intervention goals and objectives).
Self-management skills and communication skills with clients and co-workers will be developed in a professional setting and students will reflect and be provided with feedback within both academic and clinical contexts.
Students will also gain experience in critiquing assessment tools that occupational therapists use in a practice context as well as gain skills in clinical documentation needed for practice settings.
Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- Describe and apply the principles of client-centred practice, the clinical reasoning process and key theoretical models of human occupation related to the occupational therapy practice settings.
- Explain the role and contribution of different health professionals within a team
- Use self-reflection practices and constructive feedback to modify behaviour
- Select, administer, appraise and critique assessment tools and assessment methods used in occupational therapy practice
- Demonstrate proficient information gathering and professional documentation skills related to occupational therapy practice in clinical settings
- Demonstrate respectful and professional behaviour in both academic and clinical environments including health care team members, consumers, carers, fieldwork supervisors, and academic staff
Each student enrols in this unit will need to attend a 5 days per week for 3 weeks (total 15 days) fieldwork placement in a clinical setting.
- Review and comparison of two clinical assessment tools (1,500 words) (30%)
- Clinical/fieldwork workbook (3,000 words) (40%) (hurdle)
- Report writing assignment (1,000 words) (30%)
Additional hurdle requirements:
- Reflective journal (500 words) (hurdle)
- Satisfactory attendance and completion of 15 day placement as evaluated through the Student Placement Evaluation Form - Revised (SPEF-R).
- Completion and submission of SPEF-R, timesheet documenting clinical placement hours and Student Review of Placement form.
- Attendance at 80% of unit scenario based tutorials, practical skills sessions and seminars is required to pass this unit
On-campus: Total 6 hours scheduled per week for the first 10 weeks. This includes:
- 2 hour lecture/online
- 2 hour practicum
- 2 hour tutorials
Off-campus: 6 hours self-directed per week. This time will involve research, pre-readings and preparation required for lectures, practicums and tutorials in the first 10 weeks.
Week 11-13, students will attend 5 days per week for 3 week fieldwork placement.
