Synopsis

This unit draws together the theoretical and clinical underpinnings of child psychotherapy principles.

The structure of the unit will follow 4 strands: professional practice, exploring the efficacy and evidence base for practice, contributions of contemporary theory, and specialist topics involving ethical dilemmas and controversial issues in child psychotherapy.

The unit will allow students to consolidate and apply the diverse skills and knowledge gained in their degree, based on problem- and experience-based learning. A work discussion model will be the focus for enhancing and enriching these learnings as they apply to their professional practice.

Regular virtual classroom group experience where opportunities for peer-to-peer exchange of these ideas will be facilitated.

Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate key research findings in relation to child psychotherapy's efficacy and evidence base.
  2. Critically analyse key issues relating to contemporary theory and practice.
  3. Describe and integrate complex issues observed in professional practice with children and families.
  4. Develop reflective practitioner skills through applying, integrating and consolidating changes into practice.
  5. Analyse contemporary issues and formulate creative responses relevant to the psychoanalytic theory and practice of working with children and families
  6. Cultivate deeper and reflective insights into complex ethical and practice dilemmas impacting work with children and families

Assessment

  • Virual classroom participation, discussion, and x 2 presentations (1000 words each) (20%)
  • Written essay (2,000 words) (30%)
  • Essay/Case study (2,000 words) (30%)
  • Weekend Workshop: Preparation/pre-workshop (500 words), workshop interaction and participation, post-workshop activity (500 words) (20%)

Hurdle requirement:

Students must pass each element of assessment to pass the unit

Workload requirements

12 hours per week - online and self-directed.

This is primarily an online unit; plus two days of interactive workshops on-campus.

Detail: Students will be expected to log on each week to complete at least 12 hours of work consisting of online participation in a virtual classroom group (at least 1 hour weekly) and other self-directed work.

Content will include use of a workbook, discussion room exercises, set readings, and case-based discussions.

Students will be expected to undertake additional readings and dedicate time to the assessment tasks assigned to this unit. One interactive workshop experience (students will spend 9.00-5.00 on campus as part of their residential weekend).
