In this presentation I will introduce the emerging field of plasmonics that utilises electromagnetic surface excitations on the boundaries between metals and dielectrics. Through the fabrication of nanostructures exhibiting these resonances, it is possible to design materials with striking optical properties in the visible and near-infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. These elements form the building blocks of metamaterials with tailored optical properties and optical antennas that have the capacity to control the emission and propagation of light.
