Definition of terms

CAAW

PRISMS Confirmation of Appropriate Accommodation and Welfare Form which is issued by Monash after deciding whether to approve or not approve the accommodation and welfare arrangement.

Custodian

A custodian is a person who, in relation to a child, has:

  • the right to have the daily care and control of the child; and
  • the right and responsibility to make decisions concerning the daily care and control of the child.

eCOE

A document provided electronically which is issued by Monash to intending overseas students and must accompany their application for a student visa. It confirms the student's eligibility to enrol in the particular course(s) of the registered provider

DIAC

Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

Eligible relative

Is defined by Department of Immigration and Citizenship as a close relative, being

  • the spouse of the person; or
  • a child, adopted child, parent, brother or sister of the person; or
  • a step-child, step-parent, step-brother or step-sister of the person; or
  • a grandparent, grandchild, aunt, uncle, niece or nephew, or a step-grandparent, step- grandchild, step-aunt, step-uncle, step-niece or step-nephew
    and is over the age of 21.

Note: This definition excludes a cousin as a relative.

Homestay

A form of accommodation in which a person from overseas lives with a family in a host country and gives reimbursement for the homestay service

Monash University International Recruitment Services

The organisational unit responsible for the admission of international students studying on campus at Monash University, Monash College and Monash English Language Centre (MUELC).

Monash-approved care-giver service

An organisation approved by Monash to take responsibility for the general care, support and welfare of a Monash student under age 18.

Non-relative

A person who has been a close family friend for a minimum of 2 years, over the age of 21, or a cousin over the age of 21, who takes responsibility for the general care, support and welfare of a student.

On-campus student accommodation

A student residence which has been nominated by a parent or custodian, or a recommended care-giver service, or an approved care-giver, and is also approved by Monash.

Statutory declaration

A written statement of fact that is signed in the presence of a solicitor or a Commissioner of Oaths. This document is required to be signed by the approved non-relative care-giver in Australia.
