Travelling overseas with your Monash smartphone (staff)
Travelling overseas with your Monash smartphone (staff)
Taking an international trip with your Monash mobile? Use the tips below to ensure you're prepared – it may save you money and headaches.
Monash University does not officially support or endorse the following vendors or products. We're providing this information as examples of mobile services you can use while travelling overseas.
International passes
Telstra offers day and month passes for international travel. This allows you to use your existing SIM and phone plan while overseas. For more information, see our smartphone plans and billing page.
International roaming
When you switch your phone on while overseas, you’ll be prompted to turn data roaming on. Don't accept this prompt.
To manually turn off international data roaming on your smartphone, follow these steps:
iPhone
- Tap Settings > Mobile > Mobile Data Options.
- Set Data Roaming to Off.
Android (Samsung)
- Tap Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks.
- Set Data Roaming to Off.
If you need to enable international data roaming, contact Solve Communications (see contact details below). You'll need to have your mobile phone number, cost centre/fund, and faculty/division/campus information ready.
Generally, the most cost-effective method while travelling overseas is to use a prepaid SIM card from the country you're in.
If your Monash smartphone is SIM locked, you won’t be able to use an international prepaid SIM (so it’s worth checking this before you leave). To check if your phone is SIM locked, contact Solve Communications (see details below).
When using an international prepaid SIM:
- you'll have a new mobile number specific to that country
- you'll need to notify colleagues, friends and family of your new mobile number
- people contacting you from home will be charged their service provider's international rates
- calling Australian numbers will need the prefix +61
- a credit card is often required for purchase and top-ups
- mobile data packs are often available, offering a reduced rate
- support is provided by the local service provider.
