Monash Malaysia shines a spotlight on research collaborations

The Office of the Vice-Provost (Research and Research Infrastructure) recently held its Monash Technology Research Platform Retreat for the first time in Malaysia.
The annual event brings together a network of Monash Platform directors and anagers and senior researchers from different disciplines. At the four day meeting, staff from both Monash Australia and Malaysia discussed new collaborative approaches to support researchers and accelerate their research projects.
One of the highlights of the meetings was the announcement of the Annual Platform award, presented for outstanding achievements over the past 12 months.
The Monash Centre for eResearch (MeRC) based at Clayton was awarded the Outstanding Monash Technology Research Platform Award for its role in the leadership of eResearch initiatives at Monash such as MASSIVE, the Characterisation Virtual Laboratory, and the launch of CAVE2, a state-of-the-art immersive 2D and 3D visualisation environment.
Professor Mahendhiran Nair, Deputy President (Strategy), from Monash University Malaysia, awarded the Multidisciplinary Platform Award for Excellence to the Director of Advance Engineering, Prof Joshua Li for establishing collaborative research across three faculties resulting in a number of highly ranked publications.
Vice-Provost (Research and Research Infrastructure), Professor Ian Smith said the retreat was an important opportunity to recognise and build on the achievements of the research platforms at Monash and share this knowledge with Monash Malaysia colleagues to develop greater integration and build collaborations.
“Since the research platforms were established five years ago, the initiative has gone from strength to strength. Thanks to the hard work of the platform staff, researchers across all faculties have the opportunity to access world-class facilities,” Professor Smith said.
“The platforms are accelerating research at Monash, this retreat and the awards are our way of recognising this important work.”
